I am pregnant with my second child ( it's a boy!) and I was wondering if anyone knew what it would take to become a Mary Kay consultant? I have gone to some of the meetings before, and I'm interested in it. Also, I was wonding if anyone has done it, if you really do make money doing it? Or if it would be a waste of my time? I would love to be able to choose the hours I work and still have time with my kids, but lets face it. Mamma needs to bring home some money too :) So anyone with any info would be a big help? Also, if you know of any other companies that are good I would like to learn about them too, like Avon, or the "sleep over" parties would be fun. Which do you think would be better? Sorry so many questions, I'm just really curious. Thanks! you can contact me at skritz666@yahoo.com if you have real info that will help, no spam e-mails though please!

Both business are well established and been around for many years I know many people that tried Avon and had a hard time making money. I guess like anything it really depends. I have been a Mary Kay customer for 11 years and a consultant for 5 years. I have been an Avon customer off and on over the years. My thoughts are opposite the person who said it is less expensive yes Avon is less expensive so all the more you have to sell. Women are spending money on skin care and make up go t the department stores and you will see them so the client base is there but you need to find them so selling something you love and believe in is what is important. Compare both marketing plans talk to an Avon and a Mk consultant and ask questions. Yes it does cost more to start with MK however you get a lot for the money too so make sure you are comparing appropriately. It seems people who don't know facts are misleading people into believing you must buy inventory in Mary Kay this is not accurate so again speaking to someone in both businesses and getting facts is the best way to go it is great to live in a world with options and choices so do what is best for you not what other want you to believe is best. With that said also if anyone didn't believe their Business was the best then they shouldn't be in it:)

Congratualtions on your baby boy!!
I would say that you should google "home business" or "party sales" and take a look at all the different things available. Besides MK & Avon, and Partylite candles, there is scrapbooking, cooking, lingerie, etc. To make it seem like less of a chore, pick something you like.
I was a MK consultant for years, and you do have to purchase the product to sell it. If you return it to the company within a year of purchase they will buy it back, but for less than what you paid.
I would say the big bucks (and the prizes, cars, etc.) also do come with recruiting others.
But I did make up to $300 profit in about 1.5 hours several times. You have to be a salesperson for any of these jobs.
Good luck to you!!

It takes alot of time and effort to make a successful buisness out of it. I don't believe it is not that flexible to be honest I believe if you are doing this as a full time job to make money you have to work many hours and nights. When you have kids it is hard to work the nights for alot of woman anyway. If you are doing it to get discounted products and a little extra cash then I would say to go for it. I did mary kay and avon and I feel that more people end up buying the avon products then the mary kay. I believe to enroll all you have to do is go to the mary kay or avon website and find a representative that is in your area and contact them.

Mary Kay is an excellant way to make money, I just found it too expensive for start up. Then you have to deal with the parties. Avon is least expensive and you have numerous ways of marketing while being able to stay at home with the young ones. You can get an Avon website and encourage buyers to visit. The product is shipped directly to buyer so you don't have to leave home and still get paid. Hope this helps.

Both Mary Kay and Avon are Direct Selling companies with MLM
(Multi-level Marketing) opportuniteies. This is a legit business not a pyramid scheme as mentioned above. You will have to work really hard for either one. It does help if you have sales ability but this can be learned. Marketing comes in handy as well so you can find clients.
Mary Kay - www.Marykay.com
Pros- I know that you can get 50% off the product
- They have lot's of incentives and trainings and meetings
Cons- You have to chalk up alot of money in the beginning for
your starter kit.
- The parties, sometimes they are in the evenings, which is
hard if you have kids.
- People will be less likely to buy these expensive products
compared to Avon's
Avon- Avon.com
Pros - Really cheap to sign up
- Products are easy to sell
- Much easier to give someone a brochure than convince them to attend a party
Cons -you need to sell on a big scale to earn alot of money
- there are alot of reps out there so you have to be unique and creative in your marketing attempts.
- You have to buy business supplies like brochures and bags
There are also many other opportunites out there like candles, sex products, jewellery, clothing, scrapbooking. Find what interest you and then research the company. Also, research network marketing it will help you alot in the business.
Most important is to remember you will only get out of the business what you put in it and that it IS a business not a hobby.
Good luck!

I see it mentioned that it costs a lot for a starter kit to get started with MK. Let me tell you that the start up cost for the kit is $100 plus shipping and handling (8.35) plus your local sales tax.
You can make money right from the start - it depends on how you run your business and that you don't spend your money on items that won't make you money. I have had team members join for a short term to earn money for a move to those that have been in it for a number of years. It all depends on what you put into it.
For more information - feel free to check out my website - www.marykay.com/linda.nielsen I'd be happy to answer any questions.
When considering a homebased business:
Check out what wholesale rate you pay on the product
Is the product disposable so that as you build a customer base - they keep coming back to restock.
What type of support system is in place so although you are an independent contractor - you don't have to work alone if you don't want to.
What type of guarantee/buy-back is there if you decide to get out of the business - can you get most of your money back?
Best wishes and enjoy your little ones!

I tried to do the MK thing for 2 years, but I was also working a full time job. I made some money but its a lot of work. I did not like it and here is a little unknown fact about MK once you buy that product its yours--if you decide to not sell it anymore you can not ship it back to the company for a refund.

Frankly, they are both pyramid schemes. It doens't matter how much you sell, if you want to actually make money or get the car, it all depends on how many OTHER people you recruit, since everyone has to sell a certain amount a year or get stuck paying for it themselves. My friend joined Mary Kay to help her sister get the car - it cost her hundreds in merchandise that no one wanted to buy.
