you've got the right idea. there doesn't have to be a magic formula to it.

You can use chocolate chips to cover pretzels and you can use the microwave. The most important thing to know is chocoalte in the microwave burns very quickly. Here's what to do.
Put your chips in a microwave safe bowl and run for 20 seconds. Take out, stir and return again for 20 seconds. Stir again. You should continue this process but after 3 turns at 20 seconds go down to 10 seconds. Depending on the watts of your microwave you should have a 12 oz bag of chips melted 80% through within 1 minute. Once you see only small unmelted pieces in the bowl remove and stir. The warm melted chocolate will melt the remaining unmelted pieces.
Dip your pretzels and lay on a waxed cookie sheet and put in the refrigerator for about 5 minures or until the pretzels easily peel off the paper.

I don't have a double boiler but heres what i use. I get a pot fill it with water half way should do it. Get a glass bowl usually Pyrex works best. Put the glass bowl over the pot and poor your chips in there. Always keep the chips moving till it turns creamy. Once its creamy start dipping right away. Keep mixing is as you dip your pretzels too. Make sure you have a place to put your just dipped pretzels. and Ta-Dah Chocolate dipped pretzel. Oh and watch out the boiling water has alot of steam that comes from it.

You can melt the chips in the microwave, but do it at a reduced power setting and take it out every 30 seconds and stir it well. The way I cover the pretzels is to lay them out flat on a sheet of waxed paper and pour the chocolate over them...its much easier than trying to dip them.

You could microwave it but be careful to only heat it 10 or 20 seconds at a time so you don't make the chocolate spit all over the microwave. Then dip the pretzels and put them on waxed paper to dry.

CHOCOLATE Covered Pretzels:
25 min 15 min prep
24 pretzels
6 ounces milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons shortening or 1/8 block paraffin wax
24 pretzels (3 inch)
1. Melt chocolate and shortening or wax over a double boiler or in the microwave.
2. Stir until smooth and combined.
3. Remove from heat, leaving mixture over hot water if using a double boiler.
4. If using microwave you may need to reheat if mixture gets too thick for dipping.
5. Dip each pretzel in chocolate, allowing excess to drip off.
6. Place on wax paper lined cookie sheets and chill until firm.

Oven Method of Melting Chocolate:
For the oven method, place the chocolate in a moisture-free, ovenproof pan, and set it, uncovered, in an oven that has a pilot light. Leave the oven door ajar and wait until the chocolate has melted, 5 to 7 minutes.
In a Microwave Oven:
Place coarsely chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe container and microwave at MEDIUM (50 percent power) for 1 1/2 to 4 minutes, until the chocolate turns shiny. Remove the container from the microwave and stir the chocolate until completely melted. Stir milk and white chocolates after about 1 1/2 minutes. Because of their milk proteins, they need to be stirred sooner than dark chocolate. (If overheated, these chocolates may become grainy.)
I myself prefer to melt my chocolate this way:
Place chopped chocolate in a clean, dry heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Make sure the bowl fits snugly with one-third of the bowl sitting below the rim of the saucepan (this will ensure no steam escapes). The base of the bowl must not come in contact with water.
Place over medium-low heat and stir constantly with a clean, dry metal spoon until almost melted. The water should simmer not boil, boiling water produces steam which is likely to escape between the bowl and saucepan producing condensation which can drop into the chocolate causing it to seize.

Chocolate burns easily in the microwave so watch it carefully and then dip. Check your microwave book or internet for time and cooking levels. Good Luck. You do not need a double boiler to melt on stove, stir and watch. Since they are chips you'll be fine.
