We are in the midst of WWIII, the war on terror and to a lesser extent extremist Islam. The Chinese will not wish any happiness for Islam and the only loyalties to the western world come from economic interests. At this point China only needs to sit back and watch the fur fly!

World war 3 will be a war with 3 sides:

1st Side: North America, European Continent, and their allies

2nd Side: Middle East, Russia, North Korea, Allies

3rd Side: China

China does not share the ideologies of North America and its allies, nor can they stand North Korea, Russia, and the Middle East. They can and will fight any possible world war 3 on their own. They have arguably the world's largest and most powerful army (a potential 1.2 billion troops)

China's nuclear capability is weak - a wise decision from the Chinese, because if they limit their expenditure on Nukes, they can improve their conventional arms, whish, at the moment, are about two generations behing the US, UK, France and Japan.
China is not a military threat to the major Western powers, and Japan's superb navy will deter Chinese expansion outside of their own territorial waters (comments from Japanese participants are welcome - as a Briton, I love Japan).

China will sit on the fence and scoop any spoils after the conflict, but it is unlikely that there will be any conflict of World War proportions. Who is going to fight whom?

china are on their own side. they will sit on the fence and then make their move when all the other nations are a spent force. china are notorious players of the long game and always have been. we think in decades where they think in centuries. they will bide their time and then come up on the inside fence and take over the whole world.

speculative question about China,, in one sense it would have to be on Iran's side simply because it s where its has huge oil and gas interests necessary to fuel its growing economy!. on the other hand its largest trading partner is the US which realisticly is the only power likely to go to war with anyone. so its a toss up ! either way china has a lot to loose.

If WW3 breaks out in the Middle East, China is going to play it neutral. Then once all the bombs have dropped, China is going to be an unscathed superpower. And no a nuclear war is not going to spell the end of mankind. Only the USA has enough nuclear warheads to accomplish that.

China's, of course! But they will float weapons to our enemies and deny they are. I wonder whose side Russia will take? Hopefully ours. They've been attacked by Islamic terrorists, too.
