Seriously...if 52% of marriages fail...why spend thousands of dollars on a wedding that may or may not last? If you make it to your 25th anniversary..then have a big show..otherwise..who cares?

I agree...i always heard they were outrageously expensive. I recently started planning mine and am now thinking of having a destination wedding. ...much cheaper.
my only issue is that a lot of people might be upset that they can't all be invited but i don't want to put myself in debt for one day that i will barely remember b/c everything will be go so fast. I think they just like to show off or something. If you have the $$$ go for it but i want ither things in life like...my kids to go to college! and to be comfortable. and swimming on an island...not in debt!!! so i don't know why they do it???

Some people spend that much on a wedding just to show off. I'm sure most people that get married don't plan on it failing and they want family and friends to celebrate their special occasion. Personally, I would rather spend thousands of dollars on a new home than on an extravagant wedding.

I agree. Why put yourself in debt for one day that you could actually set aside that money for something like a downpayment on a home, or on a car.

We are having a nice wedding, about 50 people total. I figure we could splurge for a huge renewal ceremony around our 25th anniversary, especially since some marriages never make it past the 10th year.

I seriously think that weddings that cost alot are stupid. Many people focus more upon their wedding than their marrage, I guess. Another reason why their marrage might fail, is that they married their spouse due to lust or the fact that they are rich.
There are also the wedding fanatics who have waited 22 years for this and want it to be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. Example-

Bride:Oh, we have just got to have buy those $33,000 ottomans and put them near the dance floor!

Groom:Why?

Bride: I read in a bridal magazine that.......

Groom:(mumbling-sarcasticly) This is going to be good on my credit card expenses.

Bride: What was that, hun?

Groom: Oh, nothing.

Bride: Well, any way, the caviere absolutely must be served with.....

I know why do people spend so much? I am not married but I know that I would probably spend a pretty penny. I think people spend so much because everything is so expensive. My brother had his wedding in November and he spent I think $15000. The wedding was kind of cheesy and boring. A church is at least $350. A nice dress is at least $500 and a hall is at least $800. They think that it is going to last and they want to celebrate their love but I think people do spend too much money.

WISDOM OF A 28 YEAR MARRIAGE

1. Wedding celebrations are not planned or held for the convenience or comfort of the bride and groom.

2. Brides who fall into the "Instant Princess" trap deserve whatever happens to them.

3. Modern American weddings tend to be about competition, payback and social obligation rather than joy and family.

4. Ignore 80% of what your mother and girlfriends suggest to you, 90% of what professional wedding planners suggest and 100% of what you see on TV.

5. Elope.

I agree! The national average spent on a wedding is about $20,000! I could use that on a downpayment for a house! We only spent about half that, mostly ourselves and his parents because my mother could not do much, and we had a very nice wedding. The only thing I would have changed is the rain, ha! ; ) Who wants to be in debt for the next 15 years from just one day? :-p

I agree. We had a small wedding and have been married 26 years. My girlfriend had the big wedding as did a niece and both are on their second marriages. I would rather see young couples save the money and spend it on home furnishings,

People do spend alot on their weddings, but the thing is, is that it is the biggest day of your life. It doesn't matter about the statistics. Its a day you will remeber for the rest of your life. That is a day you are supposed to be celebrating, nto just throwing on some jeans and going to the court house, even though there nothing wrong with that. You want everyone to be celebrating it with you, because you are happy.

Despite the statistics, we have not found a better way of life then to share our life & love in a responsible way; marriage.

And despite the people of both sexes who say there are no good mates left, they continue to look for their perect match.

Whether you choose to spend a lot or a little on the wedding is entirely a personal decision.
