Three guys are on vacation, so they check in at a hotel. They ask the manager how much per room, and he says 30 dollars. They say OK, and they check out one room for all three of them. Each one forks over 10 dollars to pay for it. They go up to their room. An hour later, the manager thinks he charged them too much, so he tells the bellboy to go give them back 5 dollars. On the way to the room, the bellboy wonders how he is going to fairly divide 5 dollars between 3 people, so instead, he just takes 2 dollars and returns $3 to the men, so each man got a $1 refund. So in essence, the each paid only 9 dollars.

Heres the mystery: each of the 3 men paid 9 dollars, so that is $27 total, right? Plus the $2 the bell boy took, that equals $29... Where did the other dollar go?

Thats wrong. The three men payed $25 for the room, $2 went to the bell boy and each man got one dollar back.

25+2+1+1+1=$30

In essence, they did not pay 9 each. The innkeeper got paid $25 which is the total that they paid. It divides into 9.3333333 each and if you multiply that times 3 it equals out to 28, then you add the 2 that the bell boy took and it equals out to 30.
You already cheated them out of money by asking the question to where you rounded down. They paid $25 total, got back $3 = $28, and the bell boy took $2 = $30. Either way you look at it is fine.

Each of the men paid 9, and each go back 1 so that is 30.
Manager got 25, bell boy got 2, men got 3 so that is 30.
Either way you look at it it is fine.

Your math is off if it was 30 dollars and the bellboy got 5 to give them and then gave them 3 instead then 3+25=28 plus the 2 the bellboy kept.

All this is is the power of suggestion to where you say it would be 27 and then we assume it is but this is not the case. :) Thanks for the riddle though....

The men paid $25, the boy took $2 and he returned $3, hence that accounts for the $30.
