Such as a life-or-death kind of thing, like a plane about to crash, would you start praying for forgiveness?

Mother, forgive me, I haven't done my obligations as a son (because she is still alive)

Never!! A life/death situation does not create something that had never existed... I won't pray even in desperate situation.. That is the same as cursing your parents, wishing them dead every single day, then crawl back to them when you're in need of some money or food... I'm not saying that the thing yuo call 'god' is equivalent to parents though.. Was just making an example... But that's just me... I won't pray.. Never will... Other atheists might have a different view..

People confuse religion with faith. Religion is a set of rules. Faith is what's left when all else is gone. I could pray for my life to be spared without having to pray to be relieved of the guilt imposed by the rules of Christianity. Stated another way, your question has a "holier than thou" edge on it that tells the world that you've been brainwashed. I'm not an atheist; I simply don't drag around the ball-and-chain of Original Sin. -- forgiveness for what?

Can I answer this as a Pagan? Personally - no. I might pray to my deities for a quick and painless death (mostly to distract myself so I'm not as "in the moment" during the impact), as I make no assumptions about an afterlife. (Never died and lived to tell about it.) I also don't believe in damnation or heaven.

So my guess is that the answer to this question would depend on what a person REALLY believes about the afterlife. If a person is concerned with eternal damnation and he believes in it - certainly. But if not - then why would a person pray for forgiveness?

no, I would get in the crash position and or in some other situation, I would look around and see if there was a way to physically get out of the mess. Wasting time praying could get you killed man. Need some action in a situation like that.

No. I would be much too busy dealing with the situation to even think about praying, even if I believed in it. I once ran out of fuel while flying my airplane, and knew that in two minutes, I was going to land somewhere -- but I got to pick. I landed on a road, with only minor damage when a wingtip struck a speed limit sign.

No. If I was to slip and go back to my old Catholic ways it would be to pray for divine intervention in saving the plane. I have done nothing to my knowledge that I need forgiveness from *God* for.

Not an Atheist, I'm Heathen.... No, I would not call out to your God for help or forgiveness. Why should I? I don't believe in him. That'd be like praying to invisible magic puppies to save me.

Now Doug, would you pray to Odin to give you victory in a battle? You wouldn't because he's not your God. Likewise, your God, Jesus, isn't mine.

NO. Why would i want to do that? Just because i would be at deaths door doesn't mean in going to suddenly start praying to something i don't believe in.

Hell no, why would I waist time with praying. i would try to find a way to survive. Even if I was religious I wouldn't, i belive that the Bible says God will help those that help them selfs.
