Another way is the oven.Pour the condensed milk in a casserole dish, then put that in a larger dish, fill empty one about half way with boiling water. (water bath) make sure for safety reasons you pour the boiling water after pans are setting on over rack. Bake at 350 for about 1.5 to 2 hours, till it is a nice caramel/toffee color.

Are you talking about Dulce de Leche? I got a recipe off of a cooking show called Daisy Cooks with Daisy Martinez. You need 2 cans of sweetened ,condenced milk. Pour into a glass pie plate and cover the plate with aluminum foil. Place pie plate in a larger pan and fill the pan with water to go half way up outside of pie plate ( bain Marie). Place in 350 degree oven for 2 hours. Cool and whisk to loosen. Pour over ice cream, use as cookie filling etc. Seems a lot easier than boiling and stirring for a couple of hours.

It is really good. Serve it under milk. It is sweet.

You have to boil the can for 3 hours. Be sure to keep the can under water. If it dries out it will expolde. If it is not totally under water the caramel will not be all the same consistancy.
