I have really really curly hair, that continues to get curlier every year. I want to get my hair permed, to help loosen up the curls. I used to be able to wear my hair down (i did every day), but now i have these little tiny curls that shrink up when i leave my hair down. When my hair is straightened it comes down about 3 in below my shoulders, but when its curly my hair comes about an inch below my chin.

I am just wondering what getting a perm will do to my hair. People have told me that it will lighten my hair, and i want to know if there are any other effects that i should know about. thanks!!

Some perms can really dry-out and damage your hair. Therefore, you're better off getting a very gentle, or natural, perm. It's important that you get the chemicals rinsed out on time--though some perms stop working after a specified period of time.

If I were you, I would get a perm done with the largest rods they have--since you want to loosen your curls. Small rods make for small curls.

Good luck!

It can lighten your hair, but only 1 or 2 shades. It can also make your hair dry and frizzy if you don't use the right products on it. If you have curly hair, you probably have pretty strong hair, so you should not have too many problems with it. Make sure that the person giving you the perm knows what she is doing and if need be, purchase the shampoo and conditioner and other styling products from your hair stylist. My stylist uses Opticurl on my hair and I get beautiful, soft curls. I have the opposite problem from you though, I have absolutely straight hair.

It's very drying to the hair. At first it'll seem nice, but then you end up with split ends and flyaway hair. I'd be more inclined to using hair care products available at any drugstore than to go with the more expensive and damaging perm.
