Dogs that are commonly referred to as Pit Bulls are the American Pitbull terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the English Staffordshire Terrier. Contrary to what most believe, these are 3 different breeds, though they share common ancestry. The American Pit Bull or APBT is a fairly modern breed that tends to be about 40- 55 pounds. These dogs were bred specifaly for pit fighting. They are very fast yet powerful for their relatively small stature. The breed came about during the mid 19th century when dog fighting breeders used English Staffodshire and introduced more Terrier into the bloodline.
The English Staffordshire is a stout Bulldog type breed. They are typicaly about 55-65 pounds, but are much more stout and shorter than APBT's. They have a lot more Molloser or 'Masstif"
like blood and were primaraly farm dogs in England. They were used as pit dogs and for bull baiting due to thier extreme strength and power and fearlessnes. The American version arived in the late 18th century with Irish immigrants, who introdused more Molloser into the bloodline to increase the dogs size. American Staffies can be anywhere from 75-110 pounds. In my opinion it is easier to curb the natural dog aggression in AmStaffs as they were mostly the working varriation of Pit Bulls, the worked cattle ranches and were used in weight pulling competiotions because of the dogs unearthly stength. ( I happen to own and breed AmStaffs). Dont get me wrong, this animal still has a very high prey drive and requires a dominant and confident handler.
All this nonsense about red-nose, blue, and black pitss iss just that, nonsense. I had a fawn ***** that had red, blue and black pups in the same litter. Its just color variation. Also, Pitbull,s jaws do not lock, they just have verry powerfull jaws and can clamp down and stay that way because of determination and strength.
In the early 20th century some breeders in the south introduced English Bulldog and Mastiff to AmStaff and came up with the American Bulldog, this dog is also sometimes refered to as a Pit.
Later, fight breeders introduced Neopolitan Mastiff and Cain Corso to Amstaffs and produced the Carolina Bannedog.

Do you mean the bloodlines of the Pit? There is only one breed of American Pitbulls, but there are many different bloodlines. In my area, some of the big bloodlines are Gotti and Gator.

Only 1 BREED, called American Pit Bull Terrier by UKC, and American Staffordshire Terrier by AKC. I think you are asking about well-known kennel names?
