There is no such thing as "madness" or "lunatics", these are very archaic and very vague terms for mental illness. There are many mental illnesses each with different symptoms, causes, and effects.

Insanity presents in many forms and depends on the illness. Pick a specific form of mental illness. Lunatics were once thought to be driven mad by the moon - luna = moon. It was a term used to refer to anyone with a mental illness long before mental illness was better understood.

Attacking an innocent neighbor under the premise that they posses illegal firearms... Throwing grenades into their living room and killing an innocent two year old.. Then considering that casualty
"collateral damage" in your quest for the weapons... Then going into your neighbor's house and setting camp in their bedroom... Ousting your neighbor from the house because he or she once spanked the (now dead) kid --- the same one you killed. Then threatening to attack your neighbor's neighbor because they have allegedly supplied firecrackers to people who are against your occupation.

The most common sign is asking strangers if you are.
Lunatics are the ones that answer.
