Snoring can be attributed to many things in dogs. Some breeds are more prone to snoring than others. Dogs that are brachial cephalic (such as Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, and ShihTzus ... most all dogs with the "pushed in" face) are more prone genetically to it. Also, dogs that have collapsible tracheas (such as Yorkies, Pomeranians, etc) are more apt to have snoring problems. This is especially true as the dog ages.
It could also be a sign of a sinus/respiritory infection (or just a bad cold).

Some dogs do snore when they are deep in sleep. Often, the cause is overweight which can lead to an obstructed airway when the muscles all relax. It is similar to a human who snores.

All of my French Bulldogs snore a little. They snore because of the anatomy of their nose and throat (they way that they are shaped), and luckily my dogs do not have much trouble with their soft pallete and nose so they do not snore much (Frenchies have problems called elongated soft pallete and stenotic nares which causes the airflow to be reduced, thus causing snorting and snoring).

My dog is a lab/basset mix who is slightly overweight and snores all the time! Usually it's the loudest when she rests her head on the arm of the couch and it's not in line with the rest of her body.

Very loudly! My guess is because he always lies in add positions and it blocks his sinus passages.
Some dogs snore because they have short nasal passages (this is a breed specific thing - Pekingeses, boxers, mastiffs, pugs, Boston terriers etc) and some snore just to annoy us (my personal working theory.

Both of my dogs snore, and louder than most people. I assume they do it for the same reasons humans do.

LOL! It is normal. My shih tzu snore as loud as a person. He has small nasal passages. It is particularly common in dogs with faces that are slightly pushed in. Like a Shih tzu, pug, bull dog...etc...

My two pugs snore like crazy, it's gotten worse as they've gotten older.
I do believe if the dog is overweight, it causes the airways to constrict when they're lying down. Too, with pugs, their passageways constrict as they get older.
It's a normal thing with dogs.
