A crossover is a splitter or a divider of sound. Usually broken into High (tweeters), Mid (4.5 inch to 6inch) and Low (10 to 15 inch ish)

Crossovers are needed when running separated speakers.

Most Amps have a crossover built into them so that you can split up the Watts to different speakers. For example, you could have a 300 watt amp with a crossover that will allow you to send 100 Watts to the Tweeters, 100 Watts to the Mids, and 100 Watts to the Subs.

Active Crossovers are electronic and Passive Crossovers are like a dormant switch.
