Arguing over the internet is like running in the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded.

Depends on how you define intelligent conversation. I would define it to be two people discussing an issue amicably using facts and opinions to formulate an argument. Unless each person has an opposing view point then their is no need for a winner. And if that is the case then of course it would be human nature for each person to want to be the winner, but that doesn't detract from the intelligence of the conversation.

an intelligent conversation is always debating something, otherwise it has not point to it and therefore is not intelligent.

But a conversation based on two people's curiosity for each other and what they find as interesting needs no winners, because both are winners. And that, my friend, is intelligent.

If you win an argument, you can feel good, but if you lose one, you may learn something. Which is one reason why I engage in hopefully intelligent conversation; the other reason is to attempt to impart wisdom, of which I believe that I have a fair quantity to share.

This is a good point. There is a difference between a discussion and a backdoor argument. When you enter a conversation with an agenda it becomes quickly obvious.

Yes, we should all speak with an open mind. Unfortunately many of peoples pre-conceptions get in the way of this :/

yes, i am guilty of that. We often go to great lengths to prove our cases, and merely for our own gratification rather than that which we are defending.
