I realized after dropping my 1040 in the mail that I could have claimed another deduction. I efiled another return, which I now realize was a mistake. My efiled return has been accepted, but I'm wondering if they'll reject it when they get my paper return processed... or what will happen? Will they accept the paper return, the efiled return, or neither?? What should I do??

You will receive the refund from the return you electronically filed first. Sometimes the IRS will catch this type of situation and not issue the refund twice. Sometimes, they don't. Whatever you do, if they send you the refund from the return you mailed, do not cash it. They will catch it by the end of the summer and ask for it back. Plus interest and penalties. If you get two checks, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and speak to a rep to see what you need to do.

In my years of dealing with the IRS, I learned they always accept the first return they get. In this case your efile. They will notify you that they got another return, and that if you want to amend your efiled return to get a 1040X.

They should reject the paper return, but if they do not and send you money please do not cash the check. Contact them and ask what you shouuld do to return it.

Do not be surprised if you get audited.
