Bellow are three links, one to AKC.org which has descriptions of all the breeds and gives a nice overview of each one. Do your research and find the dog that appeals to YOU most. Another is a site that list puppies, but you might also want to look for someone that you trust in the breed you choose and go and see the puppy and its parents first hand and in person when you buy one. That way you will know what the puppy is going to grow up to be like and you will see the temperament of the mother or other relatives that you can see and know better whether you will be happy with the decision. The next site does list some prices so you can determine what they are going for in different locations and of varying qualities.

Why not just get a nice puppy of a breed that you will be attracted to. Often they aren't any more expensive than a shelter asks for the adoption of something that you know nothing about. Of course, there are also many that are more expensive, and if you want to spay or neuter you would have to do that on your own. Than again medical expenses would not be paid by a shelter either. Some shelter fees include the costs of altering while other shelters require owners to alter dogs after adoption and pay for it themselves. That depends on the individual shelter.

But truth be known, if you live in a populated area there probably are not many young small dogs available for adoption. If you live in a less populated area that has more dogs than you might find one in a shelter. Shelters in the Northeast have been importing small dogs to meet the demand. Bellow is a website with puppies, and another with some information on shelters importing adoptable small dogs from over seas because of the small supply here. To understand more why I said that it will be difficult to find a small dog in a shelter read the last link bellow.

There are a lot of small short haired dogs. Chihuahua, beagle, pug, Boston Terrier, French bulldog, jack russel terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, Whippet, and West Highland White Terrier. Those are the small short haired breeds that i can think of. You can do some research on these breeds so you know which one's personality would fit best with your lifestyle. You can also search on http://www.petfinder.com/ for dogs who are in shelters in your area. This way you can find a dog, whether it is a pure breed or a mixed breed, that fits the description you are looking for. And you can also ask the shelter volunteers about the dogs personality, as they work very closely with the dogs. Good Luck finding your dog!!

I have a mini fox terrier. She is the best she eats very little is sociable and also a excellent guard dog. She cost me $120 but they can sell as cheap as $50.She is great around kids and loves the beach. She doesn't run away (we have no fenced yard). She is an inside dog and was very easy to train. She does lots of cool tricks also.

Nobody 'needs' a dog. If you want one, do your own research. Buying a dog is the easiest part of owning one.

I have a cairn terrier and she's just perfect. I consider her a low shedder. A cairn should cost $350-750.
