I mean what exactly can you do at night during the sabbath since you can't turn on the lights or light candles

They leave an occassional light on here & there around the house on Friday afternoon...
They can also ask a non-Jew to turn it on for them.

Orthodox Jews often put lights on timers so they can have light into the evening. Before the days of electricity, some Jews would hire a non Jew to come in and light candles and lamps for them.

No, we don't sit in the dark---

We turn on lights beforehand and leave them on until Saturday nights. Some of us have our lights on timers. To answer what we do--we will play games, read, spend time with the family telling stories, teaching Torah, or something else fun like that.

It so happens that when I was young an Orthodox Jew lived near us and he would almost beg any willing Christian to turn his light on for him,needless to say there was never any payment made, and I dont remember even a thank you, but still people would do this for him.
