Language is very flexible, and over a few years can be twisted to any purpose. Look at the word "gay" for example.

I don't think that is true. There have been alterations, due to translation errors, of which the most notorious surely must be the use of the English word "virgin" for the Greek word meaning "unmarried woman". Various different written versions of the "original" texts have survived; these differ, of course, so any translator attempting to do a decent job has to pick and choose.
