Depends on what job you want to do.

Like if you want to go into Linguistics, you major in Linguistics.

It also depends on if there's a vacancy in that job field. Just because you have a college degree doesn't guarentee that you'll be able to become an officer. There may not be a need.

Any 4-year degree will do although for many career fields degrees in engineering, EE, science, aeronautics are preferred. Other specialties such as the medical field require specific degrees as well. For example, if you wanted to be a hospital administrator, a degree in that field would be advantageous.
