Well if you were your parakeet, wouldn't you feel kinda lonely? I suggest getting him/her a friend. If you want little birds buy a bird of the opposite sex. Otherwise get the same sex.

If your bird is looking lonely, then you probably should get another one. If you don't spend a lot of time with him, he will be lonely. Parakeets are flock birds. They need companionship. I'm guessing your bird is tame, since you said that you have a good bond. If you want to maintain that, get another bird of either sex who is also tamed. A wilder bird for a companion may turn your pet wild. As for the baby birds issue, unless you have a next box, there is a 99% chance that they will not lay eggs. Not having babies is a good idea because of overcrowding, and the birds will stay tamer. So, yes, you should get another keet, just make sure it is tame. You can play with them when you have time, and they will keep eachother company the rest of the time. You may also want to put them in seperate cages in the beginning, and put them next to eachother. This will help them get adjusted better without the shock of suddenly having a cage mate. Good Luck!

I saw a thing on this pet advice show (on Animal Planet) where somebody had a very unhappy budgie and they said to get him a little friend to keep him company.

The two wound up very happy together and it was really heartwarming to see how the sad little guy perked up so much when they got him a little budgie buddy. He was singing, chirping, they were playing around--it was great.

Sometimes, two is much better than one. As far as rare--as long as the other one doesn't compete, it should be OK, but if there's some kind of competition between types, get one of the same type. Definitely, go for the second one. I think two is a better situation.

Two parakeets are great fun. They love to interact with each other. You will enjoy watching them together. Parakeets are very social birds; I'd say absolutely, get him/her a friend!!
