I have Strep Throat and went to the emergency room yesterday. My doctor prescribed Penicillin for the germ and Vicodin for the pain. Ever since I've been taking them I've been itchy all over. Mostly on my face. It's not bad, like a painful itch or red, it's the kind of itch where you scratch it lightly it feels good, if that makes sence. Is this normal? If so, which drug is doing it?

Most likely the penicillin, maybe both. You are having an allergic reaction to the drugs/chemicals you have prescribed by the Doctor. Ditch them immediately. To rid your skin of the intolerable itch put 1/2 cup vinegar in a bath of warm water and soak in it for 15 minutes. Do not use any chemical soaps or hair products afterwards, well preferably only ever use organic ones, to let your skin calm down. Instead of medications for your throat try gargling with a mixture of 2tblspns apple cider vinegar and warm water. Also drink a few mugs of warm water mixed with 2 tblspns apple cider vinegar in the morning and then a couple more in the afternoon, this will settle your system down by alkalizing the ph level of your tummy. Drinks loads of water and be kind to yourself.

If you had an allergy to the Penicillin, you would have had to go back to the ER because your throat would have closed up. It's the Vicodin. Narcotics do make you itchy. Very itchy. Try taking the Vicodin with 25 mgs. of Benedryl. That will help.

This is most likely the vicodin doing this. Itchy-ness can be a common side effect of a lot of narcotic pain medicines. If you have no problems taking benedryl, you can take a dose of that and it will help with the itchy-ness. I would def. get the non-drowsy type so that you wont be too dopey.

Have you ever taken penicllin before? If not, you should call your Dr, to rule out any allergic reactions to the anti-biotic.

I'm surprised you have Vicodin prescribed for a strep throat, the
antibiotic would be sufficient.

Caution with Penicillin, if you have a mold allergy, or even if you have never had an allergy, you can develop on. Be very
cautious, look it up on webmd.com or medco.com as to the side effects.

Ugh...ignore the person who told you to ditch the medications. If you don't take antibiotics for a strep throat, it will develop into something much worse, and could possibly leave permanent damage.

Call up the pharmacist and ask if the itch is normal. Pharmacists are some of the best people to ask when it comes to drug reactions. Here's a website for info on Vicodin: http://health.yahoo.com/drug/d03428a1 and here's one for info on Penicillin:http://health.yahoo.com/drug/d00116a1;_ylt=AjhT2gE.dd5Zf_HD102mFs0kD7sF

Hope this helps...

No, it's not normal. I would stop taking the medicine right away and go back to see your doctor so he can write you a different prescription. You could be allergic to one of the medicines, and it's not something to be taken lightly. I almost died when I was younger from an allergic reaction to penicillin. Now, I can't take anything even remotely close to it.
