you certainly choose a automobile in l. a., the ordinary public transportation isn't as solid as in NYC, Boston, Paris, and so on. The Metro easy rail/subway is particularly limited in l. a., and l. a. is particularly huge. in case you reside appropriate close to a Metro easy rail/subway station, and your paintings or college is close to a station, then that's handy, surprisingly in case you do no longer would desire to alter trains. in any different case, you would be able to by no potential use it, and our buses have a tendency to be sluggish, and customarily there are long wait situations for transfers, and the buses do no longer run just about as oftentimes as they did while i replace right into a new child. They take fairly some time usual once you're going any distance or would desire to circulate. as much as i admire the ease of the NYC subway, after at present utilising there for the 1st time, i'm going to take l. a. and automobiles purely. (i replace into taken aback on the individuals strolling interior the path of the packed street, interior the friggin' bus lane too, while the sidewalks weren't finished, and now they have a marketing campaign to quit it. Very extraordinary phenomenon.) solid good fortune!

The subway is great if you travel where it goes. The Red Line, in particular, is fantastic if you need to go from downtown to Studio City or vice versa, or anywhere in between. The other lines are mostly above ground. The Blue line runs from downtown LA to Long Beach. The Green line runs from Norwalk to LAX, and the Gold line runs from Pasadena to downtown LA.
However, some lines are notably missing. In an ideal world, there would be a line from downtown LA down Wilshire, all the way to the ocean. However, that way is impractical because of all the tar and gas deposits along that rout. And if there was a route that ran from the San Fernando Valley, say Sherman Oaks or even Granada Hills, through West LA and all the way to the airport, wouldn't that be great? You could even extend it north to the Antelope Valley. Anyhow, I was just dreaming.
When I worked in Irvine, I used to take the Metro Link from Fullerton to Irvine, which was VERY relaxing. There are also MetroLink trains running from the Inland Empire to LA. It's worth checking out. You lose some convenience in not having a car, but it's so much more relaxing and faster.

The Los Angeles subway is one of those "political pork barrel projects" and as such is a JOKE. It was intended to go from L. A. to Santa Monica. but so far only goes to North Hollywood. Don't you remember a few years back about the T.V. news stories about how all the merchants in the area were complaining that they were loosing business because of the construction. Yes we have a (very) short subway line, but is really nothing but a waste of tax payer dollars.

a lot of people do use the subway or the Red Line as its called
it sure beats the 101 freeway! from North Hollywood to Union station
then remember there is also a branch of the red line -now called
the Purple line from Union station to Wilshire/Western
yes I think it would be worth looking into riding the Red line
like for $3.00 you can get a day pass good any where on the Metro system (like going to Long beach ) which just one transfer
at the 7th/Metro station to the blue line
you sure cant get to Long beach and back on $3.00 of gas!
my own pet peeve is lots of time the media
called the Red line or the Blue Line -METROLINK
(thats the commuter rail service that service outer area (like
San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange and Riverside counties)

You're not stupid for asking the question. And I'd certainly stick with the car.
L.A.'s subway "system" is laughably inadequate. It's one 16 station line, and it only goes from Downtown to North Hollywood (via Vermont and Hollywood Blvd).
I found no use for it when I lived in the L.A. area, and I doubt it has improved much since then. It might be of some use to tourists and movie producers (who can pretend that it's New York or something)...but the car still reigns supreme for everyone else.

Yes, it is convenient to travel by bus and rail in LA. Please go to http://metro.net/default.asp, then select Bus Map or Rail Maps to take a loot at them.
Enjoy!
