I have a westie who is now 7 months old, he is very intelligent and observant, if you are looking for a lap dog don't get a westie, they are very active and the only time they are still is when asleep! they need lots of attention and will demand it, he can be rather stubborn and needs alot of consistancy in training, has a thing for chewing my shoes and that's after been told off time and time again not to, he is an extremely social dog and loves children (my son 10). Couple of thing's I have noticed with him though is that when we are out walking him if he see's a cat that's it he is off chasing it and will not come back, hard work. He also likes to dig, he will go to a corner in the house and dig like mad for about 5 minutes at a time, my skirting boards are all scratched. I believe this is natural instinct to a westie as they were originally bred to dig and hunt small animals. He loves company but can be left for periods on his own without damanging anything (shoes locked in cupboard)!!

My in laws have a Westie who is a complete nutter!!! She is very very VERY bouncy and exciteable and like you mention, likes to dig up the carpet, also bark the house down when visitors arrive and jump all over them!

She's really cute though and a smashing little dog. They also have a Westie/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross who is not much better! a complete pair of little tearaways.

Yorkies are really cute, although some have a tendency to be yappy. This behaviour can be controlled though, with training. I've had two toy poodles and they were never yappy because they were taught not to be.

With Westies - watch their teeth. They can get very bad teeth and I've known several Westie owners who didn't check their dogs teeth ands the poor things had a lot of pain and problems eating. Gum disease and Peridontal Disease are not nice, whether for humans or animals! If their teeth look at all dodgy, take them to the vets for a dental.

You may look into a Silky Terrier
They look like a Yorkie, but are bigger
Their hair is like silk
My silky is small, about ten pounds
She like to dig, she's a terrier

Yorkies are a high maintenance breed. They are very much a one person dog. They need constant grooming, and petting. They are nosey, and like to be involved in all aspects of our lives. They are extremly jealous, and not very good with other dogs. They can be very fussy eaters.Insurance is a must with yorkies, they can become sickly in later life.Their teeth rot very easily its a trait of the breed. They are very stubborn.Lastly they give lots of love and friendship in return for your love and care.If you work i wouldn't have a yorkie,as they are fretters when we are not with them.Oh i forgot.Very easy to train!I hope it helps!
