We are given our life here on Earth as a proving ground. We demonstrate, thru our choices, what kind of person we are. And, these choices determine our life with Heavenly Father. Man is created equal by the fact all of us are given our free agency. You may choose what we want to do.
Before our earthly birth, we existed as spirits with our Heavenly Father. It was as the Garden of Eden, knowing no good or bad. To continue our eternal progression, we had to inherit a physical body. Hence, here we are.
After we have completed our mission here, we will be call back home. Or, in other words, we die. Sometime later, we will be reunited with our body. This is the Resurrection. Once the body and spirit are together, we will continue our progress with a perfected body. There will be different rewards based upon our choices here.

We are a set of chemical reactions. When they stop working people die. It's simple science. Our hearts can only beat so many times. Our bones can stay strong for only so long. Etc.

I don't think you are asking for the 'physical reason' people die, because you know it can be because they are 'gravely ill' or very old, or by accident or even murder or war. I think that you are asking WHY in the 'greater sense' and all I can tell you about that is 'my opinion' ...
When we are 'alive on Earth' (or even if we get to where we can 'travel to different stars') we are here 'to learn' about 'physical things' like flowers and dirt, and also math, science, and philosophy. After we die, I think that whatever makes us 'alive' (I call it my soul, or my 'spirit') goes on to live another 'kind of life' ... and that as humans we are like children in school, and that which I 'will become' is like being 'an adult' and 'all grown up' ... but like a child, I can only 'imagine' what that is actually going to be like ... but I'm also 'not afraid' of 'death' because I know that when my time to die comes, I'll be ready to 'move on.' I had a daughter who died when she was only ten days old ... but the priest who 'baptized her' on her deathbed told me that he'd done that for me, and that for the first time in his life he felt that 'the soul' that was leaving us 'humans' was going 'straight to God' because she had done 'all that He wanted her to do,' here on earth. I know some of what she did, because she died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and the son of a 'world famous doctor' was a resident in the hospital where she died, and he went on to the Crib Death Institute in Chicago, and later talked his father into funding an institute to study 'crib death' and now we know that something 'really simple' like telling parents to make sure that their 'new babies' ALWAYS SLEEP ON THEIR BACKS, because while that might seem 'counter-intuitive' (what if the baby vomits, won't it choke to death?) far, far fewer babies die of 'crib death' now, and I have yet to hear of one who died from 'choking' because it sleeps on its back.

YOUR SOUL IS YOU
Souls created, souls born, souls resurrected to salvation.
Gen.2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
JESUS LETS US SEE [ and him Acts 2:27-31 ];
Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. 52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
Heb.9:27; It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgement.
1Cor.15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But
every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's
at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy
that shall be destroyed is death.
27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
Acts17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. 24:15 Resurrection of just and the unjust.
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: John for I
came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Spirit of God is life of soul, spirit belongs to God, all else can be dust to dust.

Because the physical body cannot last forever in the same state; nothing physical can.
In a moral way, though, there's no reason. Except perhaps it gives us some structure. Living forever would mean we'd have no motivation.

Because our bodies our finite. They only last so long. They decay. That's only our bodies. Our essences, our souls live on. After these bodies get old and die, our essences get new bodies. Different kind of bodies. Eternal bodies.

When we accept Christ, we are given eternal life. This does not prevent the death of our body, but it does assure true life with him in heaven forever and ever. And isn't that the life that counts the most.
