You need to get in contact with the county or city courthouse that is named on the ticket and try to resolve the issue. As for being arrested that depends on if the police department in question is willing to extradite. In your case VA to CA, I would bet my next paycheck that they will not "take you to jail".
The Cop might "cite" you into court, per the department the warrant for fail to appear is out of. Your license is most likely suspended at this time also, which means you cannot drive, and you will receive a ticket for that. Some departments do a full custody arrest for a suspended drivers license.
Hope this answers some of your questions, all this wisdom is from a Police Officer.

You'll need to call the court in VA if that's where you got the ticket. It's probably not a big deal yet but will be by 2008, when the 2005 Federal Real ID law kicks in linking state Drivers License databases. There could be a VA warrant out for your arrest but it's doubtful CA knows about it. That will all change soon so you might want to take care of it.

hey:
I was a Military Policeman in the US Army and US Marines for 4 years. If you didn't show up for court and failed to pay for your ticket (or plead) the court can default judgement against you only if the judge wishes. If you are found guilty (whether you actually showed or not) and you don't pay your fine, a warrant may be issued for your arrest and/or your license may be suspended until you pay the fees and fines. If you haven't been pulled over lately I STRONGLY urge you to call your local PD OR find the traffic citation.. check "no contest" or "guilty" and mail it in. Also include a good return address so the court can mail you your fees. Then when they write back to you they will notify that you have "x" number of days to pay the fine or your license will be suspended. Get this cleared up now before it turns into a misdemeanor/felony and your pulled out of your car at gunpoint the next time you get pulled over....

You likely have a warrant against you. The next time you get pulled over you'll probably go to jail. You didn't mention if the ticket was from VA or CA. If it's from CA, go to your courthouse and pay the fine and penalties now. If it's from VA, contact the CA DMV and ask how to handle it.

Even though you didn't attend court you can still pay but most likely you will be charged extra for the prolonged time. It might also go on your record. Good Luck to you.
P.S. I advise you don't do it again.

I knew someone who did not do that. I belive it just went on their credit report.
I would imagine you ought to pay it only because there may be additional fees for not doing it. Good luck.
