When people ask for encouragement about getting their wisdom teeth out, I like to share this story about my three children.
I removed two of my older daughter's wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she'd be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.
Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn't even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn't last for more than 3 or 4 days.
With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn't want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don't remember the details.)
I'm not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

Pretty much everyone has to have it done. It really isn't that bad. Most of the time they use an IV sedation and put you out while you have it done so you go to sleep and wake up when it's over. Plus you're numb when you wake up. They also give you a pain killer to take as needed for after the procedure - most of the time you only need one or two pills. The pain isn't that bad. The most annoying thing is the swelling. Take some Ibuprofen and ice pack your cheek. Eat soft, cold things and have someone baby you. Follow your doctor's advice on not sucking or spitting and you'll do fine. Really, if you go to an oral surgeon, they do this ALL DAY LONG! You are in good hands and have nothing to worry about. Good luck.

Dentists and oral surgeons nowadays will take measures to make you as comfortable as possible, if you're 18 or older, you can ask them to prescribe you a valium before you show up at the office. Many will prescribe you just one or two to get at the pharmacy. You'll be nice and happy on your way in then!
I had all 4 of mine pulled, only one was coming in crooked so that was the only one that bothered me after it was over. I was put out for it too, so I didn't feel a thing, and i'm a firm believer in taking a painkiller if you're in pain. Why tough it out?
Good luck to you!

I never had mine removed and never had any problems. I chickened out at the last minute. I was so worried because my friend just had his done and his cheeks and face swelled up like twice the normal size for about a week. Unless it is absolutely necessary, like your teeth will be all crooked or something if you don't get it done, I wouldn't do it. It has been years now and I have yet to have any kind of problem because I didn't get them removed.

I had mine cut out because they were pushing the rest of my teeth out of place and I was put under general.
It was pretty simple and they gave me plenty of nice drugs to recover from the pain. The only thing that I hated about it was the fact that I couldn't drink with a straw at first.

Honestly, mine hurt worse before I had them removed. I had four impacted wisdom teeth-with infection, swelling and assorted
other sufferings. They knocked me out, don't remember a thing. The only mild annoyance was the little tube they insert to drain infection. My surgeon was Dr. Widner of Austin, Texas and his care was first rate.

If properly medicated you will have no pain during the procedure. I had all four of mine out at once and the doc had to brace his foot on the cabinets to pull them! Sounds brutal, but no pain bc of the meds and laughing gas - it was kind of a good time.
My jaws had some aching for about a month afterwards, but nothing I couldn't tolerate.
The bleeding after extraction is the icky part, have plenty of gauze.

it doesnt hurt at all during the surgery bc they put you on morphine so you don't feel a thing. after the sugury (depending) you may or may not feel loopy bc of the drug. about the 2nd day of gettting it pulled, you may feel some pain, but it doesn't hurt that much. its not that bad actually. what you can eat or only liquid (no straws),soft food no chew gummies or gum or peants nothing hard. only soft like mash potatoes or ice cream stuff like that

i had to have 4 teeth pulled around 4 years ago...and i was really freaked out
so i went to this place where they put you to sleep when they pull out your teeth..i drank this stuff that made me woozy and then got some laughing gas..and then an iv to keep me asleep..i don't remember anything and it was totally painless...if i ever have to get teeth pulled out again i'm going to do that
if your really afraid then i'd look for a place that specializes in pulling out teeth its more expensive but i think its worth it

It's different for everyone. I needed all 4 out at one and needed to have my jawbone drilled for one of them, so I was under general anesthesia instead of just local. In all honesty, I was probably only in (mild) pain for all of 2-3 days afterwards. I had a steak dinner on day 4.
If you're prone to bruising and swelling, you'll have more problems than if you're not.
