No...A gastric bypass disqualifies you...
Army Regulation 40-501 (dated 18 JAN 2007) page 4...item 2-3 ...number 5... ""History of Bowel resection is disqualifying.""
The most common type of gastric bypass is the Roux-en-Y, often done laparoscopically. Part of the procedure is a bypass of 3-4 feet of small bowel. The bowel is then reconnected. That qualifies as a ""bowel resection.""
If on active duty, you can not get a bypass as the resultant weight loss and complications would disqualify you from future service and you would automatically meet a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB). Army Regulation 40-501 (dated 18 JAN 2007) page 21...item 3-6...line e. "continues to demonstrate appreciable weight loss 6 months post-operatively."
Since the purpose of a gastric bypass is to lose weight, and almost all the time that weight loss continues beyond the six month time limit, if they gave an active duty person a gastric bypass, they would more or less be forcing the person out of the service.
If you really want to join the Army and are way over weight and do not have the self control to lose the weight on your own, you probably are not Army material anyway.

you will have to ask a recruiter, a gastric bypass once done shouldn't be an issue but very well maybe something that could cause issues in the future. ask the recruiter and if necessar get a note of release from your doc.

as long as you have already had it and in the proper physical shape I doubt that it would be an issue, if you are asking if you can join and then get it, that means that you are probably overweight and they will not allow you to join because there are set weight requirements. I would talk to your recruiter and then if you decided that you want to go to MEPS and they will tell you if it is a no go or okay.
