Le Grand écart. Jean Cocteau (1923). His first novel.

About a boy who attempts to commit suicide because he has been betrayed by his first love. The boy Jacques, broods about "An Engliahman who killed himself after writing: "Too many buttons to button and unbutton, I shall kill myself".

Suspect you can do a Yahoo or Google search but most all will be in French. This is why you have no answers.
