When I got my septum pierced, it barely hurt at all. It was just a pinch, and then it was over. With septum piercings there's a "sweet spot" between the cartilage and the front part of your nose where there's pretty much nothing, just a flap of skin, and if your piercer gets there, it shouldn't really be that painful. However, there's no guarantee that your piercer is going to get that. What I'd do is find someone who has gotten a septum piercing done in your area and ask where they got it done and how it was. Also, I'd find someone who doesn't use clamps if you can because they make the whole experience a lot more painful also!
I don't really know about the dangers, I'm sure it's the same as most other piercings, infection, etc., but I didn't really research it. Mine was kind of an impulse piercing.
If you get it done with a retainer, then yes, you can flip it up right away. In my opinion, it's a good idea to start with a retainer because, for me, it was nice to be able to flip it up while I was sleeping and not worry about it falling out or snagging on anything.
The healing and aftercare for it was also really easy. The place I go to recommends sea salt soaks, which is kind of a pain with this one because it ultimately means putting water up your nose, but it's doable. Q-tips also have become my best friend. There's really no other way to keep the area clean. My nose was only sore for a couple days after I got it, and then it only hurt if it got bumped, and now it pretty much just feels the same as before I got it done!

It is painful and dangerous. The nose has a natural pathway to the brain and to the sinuses under your eyes and above your eyes. If you develop an infection in this pirecing, you run the danger of a staph infection and more problems than you want to have. I have recently cared for a young lady who did this. I had to hospitalize her and put her on IV antibiotics. Now this may not be the case with you...but you asked, and I'm being totally serious and honest with my answer.

You'll probably need something strong to stop the pain.
Better watch out for infections, too.
