I know Jinx on Meet the Parents could use the toilet, but is that for real? Or could you even train a cat to go outside, much like you would with a dog?

Yes and yes, I trained a cat of mine to use the toilet. You start by moving the litter box into the bathroom, start to elevate it gradually over a few weeks with phone books until its nearly as tall as the toilet seat. Get a bowl (metal works best) to fit underneath the seat and put some soiled litter in the bowl. Once the cat is comfortable using the bathroom try removing the bowl (make sure all other litter boxes are already gone) if you notice he isn't going there replace the bowl with both soiled litter and some water until he is comfortable to do it with just water and again remove the bowl. The whole process takes less than a month and will save tons on litter! As far as outside I suppose you could put a litter box outside and train them to go there but I don't recommend it. Outdoor cats on average only have a life span of 6 years because of the great number of cats that get disease or hit by a car. Yes some people have outdoor cats that live 20 years but more people have dead cats than have that experience.

Yes, a cat could be trained to use the toilet. It would probably take some time, as do alot of other things involving pets, but it might be worth it. As for training a cat to go outside, that is probably possible too. Check this link.

Some cats can be trained to use the commode--others decide it's just not natural and refuse. My very first cat I trained to use the toilet but after a couple days he just didn't like pooping where he couldn't cover it up afterward and he stopped using the toilet altogether. You can also train your cat to go only outside but you have to be totally reliable to take him/her out without fail because once a cat figures out they can go somewhere inside (not in the box), it's real hard to (1) get the smell out and (2) break them of it.

Yes it means it is litter trained. Not so sure about scratching furniture, though. I ve never seen the problem with cats scratching furniture anyway Kittens get trained by their mothers when they are only a few weeks old. She should be fine once you show her where the litter box is, or if you want to play it save let her stay her first night in a room with the litter box

When I was growing up, all of our cats were trained to go outside. There was no 'training' needed... they just knew to go out.

I had a pair of cats a few years ago that we wanted to potty train. One got it pretty quick, but the other was hopeless.... and finally fell in to end the experiment. But I'm sure most cats can learn how to use the toilet.

Cats can be trained to use the toilet. Cats will go outside if put outside, they don't need to be trained to do that. If you were out in the woods and needed to go, would you need to be trained to go on the ground?

And cats can be trained to do other things as well. Most animals can.

Yes. You can train a cat to go in the toilet. However, they won't flush. Also, cats naturally will go to the bathroom outside. Of course they must be trained if they are not outside cats.

Yeah, you can toilet train your cat. I don't know about training them to go outside, though...

You would not be able to hook your cat up outside onto a leash. Your cat would not like it outside anyway in this freezing weather. Besides if your neighbors have dogs then there is no way that cat is going to like it out there.

They might be, training cats requires lots of love and patience, since they are gentle intelligent critters and don't take well to negative reinforcement. On the other hand I had a chocolate point siamese that picked up the behavior by immitation LOL
