Primer is over sold and over used!

if the walls are not a highly glossy surface you don't need primer as long as the walls are clean.

no matter what color you are going over or are using to paint, you should do 2 coats anyway. it gives you more of a depth of color and looks much better.

save your money.

skip the primer.

buy good paint!

Well, that all depends. If the room has been painted before, no. The purpose of primer is to "seal" off porous surfaces (wood, drywall, concrete, etc...). You don't want moisture to get into the surface, because that causes mold and rot. Since your wall is already painted, it should already be sealed off.

For all practical reasons, primer is generally cheaper than paint. There have been only a few occasions (rare) in which I didn't have to use at least two layers of paint to get good coverage. So, if you're going to put two layers of paint, why not go ahead and make your first layer primer? I could see why you wouldn't want to pay extra for a can of primer if you're painting a small room, but if you're painting a larger room that would require more than a can of paint, it may save you some money.

"Probably" is the answer.

IF the room is already painted with a latex paint, and the paint isn't semi-gloss, then yes you can.

IF the room is latex, but it's a semi-gloss, then you need to wash down the walls with TSP or else go over it with a sanding block to degloss the current paint so that the new paint will stick properly.

IF the wall color you have now is a lot darker than the color you want to paint, then primer's a lot cheaper than 2-5 coats of paint to cover the old color. But it's your call.

IF the paint on the walls now is oil-based (alkyd) and you want to use more alkyd paint, then you only need to wash down the walls to make them clean.

IF the paint on your walls now is latex and you want to put latex over it, just wash the walls with a little ammonia and water to get any dirt or grease off of them before putting up the new paint.

It will really depend upon what color the room currently it is and what color you are attempting to paint it. Be sure to use a good-quality paint regardless of what you're trying to accomplish. Wal-Mart sells the paint from KILZ that actually has the primer in the paint. I've used is paint myself in many rooms of my home and have always gotten good coverage. Also be sure to use a good-quality rollers and brushes to ensure good coverage. For the most part that KILZ has lived up to its one coat coverage statement. Sure there are minor areas that you may have to touch up later but for the most part it covers very well. The Home Depot as well as Lowe's will likely have paint is quality is just as good and I believe the KILZ only sells for about $18 per gallon.

Hope this helps!

That depends ...
...if you are painting the same color and the wall is not marked, soiled, or repaired with spackle ...you could just paint it

if you are changing the color, by all means prime it first, even if it is a darker color ... I once painted a melon color over old beige colored paint but I primed it white first because it made the melon look so beautiful .... and colored paints are more expensive than whites and off whites.... so you want to be sure you don't waste your money by not "underlighting" your paint.... I would prime even if I were painting a room navy blue or forest green or burgundy because the underpainting is important.... it is like an artist starting with a clean canvas ...

If the current color on the wall is a dark color and you are wanting to paint a lighter color then you need to use primer because the dark color will bleed through

If the color on the wall is light and you are just putting on another light color then you don't need primer. Happy Painting

if you are changing from an oil base to a flat paint, you have to prime. if using the same kind of paint (flat on flat, you don't have to prime.... dark colors usually take two coats.

if it is alkyd (oil based) paint currently on the walls & you want to use latex (water based paint) then you have to prime it first or the new paint will bubble & peel when it's dry as it isn't formulated to stick to the alkyd
