I did French - although I do like German as a language, I really like French too, plus French is much more widely spoken. So really, it's the most useful but pick the one that you like the best =)

First of all, German is not just spoken in Germany. Ever heard of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein? And it is the #9 most spoken language in the world, and French just barely beats them at #8, and many of those French speakers are in Africa.

more of the english language comes from the german language..it might be easier to learn. but as a practicality I would think french because it is more widely used than german and french might help you to learn some of the other languages if you were to choose it. peace

As far as a truly useful language : Spanish if you live in America, I know you might have a race issue with it but you will really need it if you want to get that Extra employers are looking for. In France they speak english, in Germany they speak english, bussiness men speak english so unless you just want to impress chicks I see no reason to learn these languages. Chinese might be a good idea too, a lot of bussiness men are going over there and get intensive classes on this language and China is becoming THE bussiness country.
Just go to Yahoo jobs and check the bilingual jobs, see what they look for, you either have to know Chinese, Spanish or Arabic, nobody requests French or German anymore.

Where are you going later in life? Learning German will allow you to move about the teutonic lands, ranging from Austria to Sweden..excluding Finland.
Learning French will allow you access to latin based language regions between Italy, and Portugal.
Do you want to land in Berlin, or Paris. Would you feel better in Amsterdam, or Barcelona? Does Milan seem favourable to Stockholm...or would you simply forget the entire matter and have tea in Brussels?
Look into it.
You choose
Sincerely,
Mister.

I would say French, because its much more widely spoken. I also found it waaaaaaaaay easier. Initially German seemed the easier of the two, as it seemed similar to English, but the further into it I got the more incomprehensible the grammar became; it just seemed to make less and less sense the longer I learned it.

french! french and english are the worldwide languages of business. they are the two most learned languages globally. and since business basically connects all countries, it's nice to speak one or the other, because when traveling to like Europe, you can always find someone who speaks either. So its useful, espcially if ur looking to a career in business, politics or law ect.

The one you are most likely to use. Do you know anyone who speaks fluent French or German? Then you could practice and probably learn more while doing so.

I'd say German, but that depends on your line of study. Many philosophical and theological books were originally written in German. And then you'll be able to listen to all the German goth bands...

when my husband and i travel,we find that spanish and german are nearly universal.we travel in south america a lot,and few people there speak french, but german is spoken frequently-so if u plan to live in or visit or work in south america, and if u dont speak spanish, german would be useful.
