I'm interested in helping build houses in New Orleans for spring break but don't know what websites to begin searching on. If anyone knows of any orhanizations that will let me volunteer during spring break, please let me know.

Habitat for Humanity is the major group working on building houses down there.
Here is a link to their NO site
http://www.habitat-nola.org/

There are also some local community groups working in most of the wards trying to provide people help with the everyday stuff (groceries, prescriptions, transportation...etc.)

It's a mess and the government still hasn't done much to help.

New Orleans is a cool place. Consider the Biloxi area also... I live here and it really feels like we've been forgotten about over here. This area is totally devastated as well. Check with Habitat for Humanity.

the best website to go to is craigslist! :) Go to www.craigslist.com, and then click on Louisiana, then new orleans....once you're there, go to the "hurricane katrina" section in the top lefthand corner. from there, you will see different things listed- click on "call for volunteers" and you will find dozens if not hundreds of ads which are placed to find specific volunteers for different aspects of rebuilding.

i'd recommend that one because it;'s updated daily. you can also post an ad letting people contact you via email- you can write what you're willing to do and capable of doing and let them find you. either way, craigslist is awesome for that purpose, and for finding other things also, so i'd check there if i were you.

thanks for being a volunteer- that's awesome that you are giving your spring break!

If you don't find one, you can always start an organization yourself. Get financial help, talk to the city officials, fire departments, etc.
