Ok, in German you don't say "Ich liebe dich" to non-romantic friends, that might be misleading.. you can choose something 'softer' like "Ich hab' dich lieb." (eekh-hub-dish-leeb)
Happy birthday : "Alles gute zum geburtstag" (a-less goo-ta tsoom ga-bourt-stug)

To a German who is not your "significant other" you don't say "Ich liebe dich" or even "ich habe dich lieb".
You say " Ich mag dich sehr"
The "ch" sound in this is exactly the beginning of "Huge", a "y" as in "yell" and a "h" pronounced at the same time,
so that would sound like / iCH 'maag diCH/, the double "a" is long, like in "father", but with your tongue relaxed.

The birthday wishes would be written "Alles Gute zum Geburtstag" and sound like "/alles 'goo-teh tsoom gay'boorts-taak/"
The " ' " denotes that the following syllable is stressed.

Yes, you CAN say "Ich habe dich lieb" to close friends and family! It's commonly used by my German friends when I was stationed there.
