I consider myself fairly experienced, and I use both win and linux. The majority of the time that I've seen computer-smart people use a 'pirate' version of Windows is because they like the ease of use. The majority of the time, you don't have to think to use it. It's just a convenience factor. Also, the availability of applications is greater for windows system.

However, once people realize that the learning curve needed for a Linux is just as much as for a windows system, and people figure out how to use it, they'll use it more.

Gamers are the biggest windows users of the linux world. Most game developers just can't seem to write games for anything other than the windows OS of the month... Until they do, windows installs will still live in linux households...

Number one, they don't install a pirated version of Windows, or at least I don't. Number two, you can't play games on Linux. Okay, you can't play the newest releases on Linux, I can't even name a game you CAN play on Linux off the type of my head. Number three, most of the people building their own computers are building them for high-end purposes, multimedia, gaming or otherwise, all things that are better (easier) to do in a Windows environment.

I'm not even going to get started on the hundreds of Linux distros out there and how a packaged for one won't work on the other or dependencies, dependencies have got to be the single most dumbest thing about Linux.

Let's see, no iTunes for Linux (though it may be possible to use an iPod on Linux, it's not easy), there are other media players but installing anything on Linux is nothing less than a pain in the neck. And so on and so forth, did I mention no games?

expirienced user writing this answer : )

1. why ppl build their own computer

u might think that buying parts in large quantities is cheap.. ur right but then.. those companies have tech support.. software department.. oh and useless qc. so in the end the price is not that nice :)

2. why ppl use win if linux is better

linux is not better. unless u read email and browse the internet u will find soon enough that linux is very limited and has no function for you as a gamer, designer, developer or anything that requires more then going to ur email program or going to ur homepage to read news.

I've built countless PC's and buy authentic versions of Windows. I have a job. I've also used Linux.
