Why does my answering machine say "messages to this phone cannot be accepted".?

I can not find my the manuel that came with this AT%T phone #[phone]. Phone only two year old. Up until now answering machine was working OK.

You have your answering machine set to "Answer Only" which will play an outgoing message, say that messages can't be accepted then hang up. The number that you have there isn't an AT&T model number, but more likely the serial number. With a model number we can point to you the exact manual you need. Make sure you didn't bump a switch on the back to the AO (Answer Only) position.
