Leaving in 1 week for my first time in Thailand (visiting 2 weeks), and trying to decide whether visiting less-developed Ko Chang with its rainforest/waterfalls would be better than more developed Ko Phi-Phi or Ko Lanta etc with its stunning cliffs and clear water?

Koh Chang! forget about Ko Phi Phi and Koh Lanta (too many tourists!).

Although Koh Chang is quickly deteriorating and gradually becoming another Koh Samui.

Last time I was there was a few months back. I noticed that they are building more and more Bungalows and Hotels. It won't be long until it is like Koh Samui.

Koh Chang is among the largest islands in all of Thailand so there are other areas you can hang out in within it.

Koh Chang is a very mellow, very Thai (sabi sabi = mellow in Thai) place to hang out. Personally, it is my favorite island out of all that I have been too.

Sadly, it won't last long. So hurry up and go!

Have fun!!

With your 2 weeks stay, why not split between Koh Chang and Koh Phi Phi? In Koh Chang, you can do the nature park visit and trek. Hanging around the beach. I guess after one week, yu may want something different to do.

Pack up and head to either Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, where there are more water activities to be had and just marvel at these islands natural beautiful beaches and waters. You can include canoeing island hopping, private island resort stay, snorkelling, diving, etc, basically, a bit more tourist-type activities to unwind.

Best of both world, I would say.

Wow...that's a hard one..I've been to all three..Yes Koh Chang is nice and quiet and very relaxing and has long white sandy beaches...not too far from Bangkok and is easy to get to, great island if you really want to chill out however Koh Phi Phi is beautiful...with amazing limestone formations, day trips to Maya beach..("The Beach"*movie)snorkeling over coral, yeah it gets alot of scando & brit backpackers but still a very nice island with a couple of bars and lots of little resturants.. and finally Koh Lanta
I would give a big miss..went there expecting something amazing after what I've heard and was hugely dissapointed..if your interested in going to muslim mosques..then it maybe for you...So preference is..#1..Koh Phi Phi (fun, sun, lots of ppl)
#2 Koh Chang (banana chair,beer,relax)
#3 Koh Lanta (bad roads, effort getting around, lots of mosques)

Thai Airways operate flights between Bangkok and Ko Samui (since April, 2008). They have near-hourly departures to/from Bangkok; tickets are expensive by Thai standards though, with advance bookings costing 2000-3500 baht. I'd go with the Khaosan Road option myself; a day or two there is an experience on it's own.

I'd say Ko Phi-Phi. It's simply stunning scenery. You won't find this anywhere else in the world, whereas Ko Chang didn't seem too special to me.

hey Shannon, didn't know you were going to Thailand : you gona love it ! I don't know the inland except Banghok which is an amazing city. If you want a paradise destination for the sun/beach part, I highly recommend the "Racha" : small island, one hour boat-trip from South-Pukhet, with 1 deluxe hotel.
Patrick from Paris !
