According to the Yahoo dictionary, the first definition of Sound is "[v]ibrations transmitted through an elastic solid or a liquid or gas, with frequencies in the approximate range of 20 to 20,000 hertz, capable of being detected by human organs of hearing."

A second definition os, "[t]ransmitted vibrations of any frequency."

A third definition is, "[t]he sensation stimulated in the organs of hearing by such vibrations in the air or other medium."

Under the first definition, the sound is made if the vibrations are "capable of being detected by human organs of hearing." Thus whether there is anyone there to hear them is irrelevant. Since the sound of a tree falling could be detected if someone was there to hear it, the sound is made even in the absence of a hearer.

Similarly, under the second definition, the vibrations are produced, so a sound is made.

Under the third definition, there is no sound, since that definition requires stimulation in the organs of hearing, and there weren't any such organs of hearing in the vicinity.

Regarding how you would know if a tree fell if there was no one there to see or hear it, I am not sure what the question is. Twice in the past four years, after windstorms, I have found trees lying over the path where I walk my dog. It was clear to me that they had fallen there, since the splintered stumps were still in the ground near the path. I also have hiked in the woods many times and have had to pick my way over trees lying over the path in varying states of decay. I don't know how they would have gotten there if they did not fall.

if for some reason a tree falls in the forest it will make a sound. because there is no one around to hear it does not change this fact. In fact you could be nearby when the tree falls and still not here it if you are deaf, but it still did make a sound. sound doesn't exist because u can hear it, it exist because u can measure it.
many things happen everyday that we do not see or hear about but it doesnt mean that they didn't happen.

of path it makes a valid. basically given which you're no longer there would not recommend the guidelines of physics quit, the worldwide would not revolve around you so replace your perception to renowned forces are working interior the universe consistently without everyone there to % it, or "hear" them. Sound waves are made up of count like a number of waves and influence gadgets around them with their vibrations. we've all heard this philosophical question, besides the undeniable fact that that's no longer meant to be taken actually, that's an analogy; like glass a million/2 empty or a million/2 finished. you do no longer care if a tumbler is definitely cutting-edge, it describes no count if somebody is confident or pessimistic. attempt this test, sneak right into a wooded area and conceal and look ahead to a tree to fall and hear for it. It won't comprehend you're there yet there will be sounds from it, JK! ha. basically via fact he's "often incorrect" would not recommend he will no longer be able to be appropriate. And basically via fact 4 "others" supported you won't recommend you will desire to be appropriate via democracy. I recommend examining philosophy and physics and this question will make greater experience to you.

Well, according to the definition of sound, a receiver is needed. If there is no receiver for the sound, then it didn't take place.
Your question should be , Was there any possible receiver for the sound?
