I'm sitting her drinking black tea without sweetener and it doesn't taste that bad. I usually add sugar or splenda to make it sweet, but I also like it in its natural form. It got me wondering why a lot of things we eat and drink need to be sweetened, with sugar or artificially. Has our society been conditioned to sweet tasting foods and drinks? Nutritionally, sugar doesn't really help the human body, unless it's fruit sugar or milk sugar. Thanks for your input.

Yes, I believe we put way too much sugar in our food in the USA. We're used to eating an awful lot of sweet food, I think a lot of candy, sweet drinks, and cookies would taste better if we didn't put so much sugar in them. It's a shame, because diabetes is becoming an epidemic.

Yes. That is very true. For my 2 year old's whole life I've never given her much candy (a little on halloween and this xmas), any soda, or ever put salt on any of her food. My whole family thinks it's bizarre and even does some things against my wishes but I think it will be much better on her later in life. I was brought up the same way. And I still don't use a lot of salt or sugar. I'd rather eat an apple than a candy bar. And I prefer water to pepsi. But we are pretty much wired to like sweet things from birth. That's why you're supposed to give babies mushy peas and green beans before apples and pears. If you do it the other way, they'll be used to the sweetness and refuse to eat vegetables.

i guess as a child sugar is more pleasing to the tastebuds so as we grow up we get used to the idea that sugar makes everything taste better. so yea i think its just a state of mind.

hmmm i don't know but i am not really big on the sweet things myself, probably my favorite thing to drink, and this just disgusts my boyfriend but i get some lemon juice and put salt in it, and i drink that in the summer and i heat it up and drink it like tea in the winter, i know its gross but i am addicted to the sour and salty stuff, not the sweet, i pick pickles over cake anyday.

So many of us weren't taught about this when we were kids.

Personally, I have a bigger problem with wanting salty things. Popcorn, pretzels, chips, salted nuts, etc. Or even pickled things.
