like if i use my laptop i usually use it till it dies, then put it on the charger again, while my dad never takes off the charger and trys to always keep it on 100%, he says his way will keep the battery alive for more than 5 years, while my way will kill it after just one year, is he right?

Depends on the type of battery. Some batteries get memories and can never keep that 100% charge. Others like nickel-metal hydride (so they say) don't develop memory. So you could totally drain it and it wouldn't affect its life.

from what I have heard no. I know that if you let it go to 0% then it will hold a charge longer but I am not positive about how long the battery will last. But my dad always kept his cell phone battery at 100% and he recently had to get a new battery only after a year. while I always let my phone run out before I charge it and mine is still working so I think it is actually the opposite but I am not an expert.

you should never let a rechargable battery die..

it really affects the battery life in the long run

u don't have to keep it 100%, but do NOT let it die anymore...
