This chart shows how to tell if your cat is overweight:

If your cat is overweight, the healthiest way to get him to lose weight is to gradually start changing his diet over to mostly high-quality canned food (make any diet change slowly to avoid stomach upset). Dry foods are high in carbohydrates, which is not natural for a cat, who is a carnivore and is meant to eat mostly protein and very little carbs. This link explains the importance of canned food in a cat's diet, and the link between dry food and obesity. It also explains how to help a cat who only eats dry to make the switch to include canned food. http://www.catinfo.org
http://www.catnutrition.org/obesity.html explains the dry food/obesity connection.
Set aside time every day for interactive play to exercise your cat. Find some interactive toys he likes, and play with him until he gets tired of it. If you do this in the evening before his evening meal, this will also help him to sleep quietly through the night.
High-energy interactive toy ideas:
a feather toy on a string attached to a wand such as 'Da Bird'

a laser pointer
a long shoestring
anything your cat loves to chase, that you can manipulate to keep him moving.

That's about normal for a male cat, maybe slightly overweight, but I wouldn't sweat it. To know if he's overweight, feel his body, you should feel a little bit of bone (but not too much.) There are special cat foods out there designed to loose weight; I don't know how well those work. Also, try to have him get more exercise.
My 3-year old cat was overweight so we just fed him less. The cat doesn't need food in its bowl 24/7. Feed it a bowl of food a day, no more than that.

Oh boy, I think we've both got the same problem! My male cat is almost 2, and 12 pounds. I did a little research and came up with a diet plan for him that really helped! Would you like to try it? It might not work for every single overweight cat, but since ours are about the same age, it's worth a shot! Here's some of my plan:
Feed 1/2 to 3/4 cup of dry food of your choice per day. Leave the kibbles out all day for snacking, but do not go over the limit.
Give him 1/4 to 1/2 of a 5.5 ounce can of wet food in the evening. I recommend Meow Mix pouched; it has only whole meat, not just the leftover scrapings from the butcher!
Make sure he has at least 1 hour of active exercise every day. Play with him one on one, it really burns the fat off!
Try leash training him. Mine is leash-trained, and I take him for long walks with me. It is enjoyable to have company when you are outdoors, and the walking helps your cat lose more weight. Try one walk per day, if the weather permitts.
You can look up other kitty diet plans on the Internet for more helpful tips. Good luck!

I don't know everything you just asked but my cat is 1 year and 7 months old and shes 10 pounds. I also wouldn't worry about your cat that much all cats weigh that much around that age my old cat weighed 40 pounds at nine years old so i wouldn't be to worried.

It depends on whether he is one of the larger pedigree breeds or a moggy. Your Vet will be able to advise you regarding his weight, there are diet foods available for both cats and dogs. Some owners think they are being loving by overfeeding their pet, what they are actually doing is killing them with kindness.

I keep my dog in great shape by playing with her everyday! At least every 3 hours, for 30 mins!! Pick a toy your cat likes, and play with him/her! That will help a bit! -- Also keep an eye on the contents of the food you are feeding him/her...NOT all foods are the same.

He sounds just a little over-wieght. I wouldn't be too concerned. You could try either not feeding him as much, or can give him Iams weight-control (or whatever type of food brand you buy) Well, good luck! :-)
