Scientific theories need to be able to withstand criticism, otherwise they're clearly worthless. That's because the purpose of a scientific theory is to provide an accurate account of reality.

Religion isn't really about accuracy. It's about comfort.
A good religion makes you feel good. It makes order out of chaos, gives you a place in the universe, provides meaning to your otherwise meaningless life, offers respite from the vacuum of existential uncertainty. God loves you, and created you specifically to be exactly who you are. When you die, you will be reunited with old friends and family, and dwell in perfect bliss for ever and ever.

The only thing criticism is going to do is make you doubt your perfect little belief system. So why listen to it? Stick your fingers in your ears and hum the Smurfs melody until the offending critic moves on, to bother somebody who cares about accuracy.

Criticism, eh? WRONG! This is something catholics like to refer to as "anit-catholic propaganda" An old Polish proverbs says that if "One wants to beat a dog, one will find a stick". The Roman Catholic Church and the Pope is constantly being attacked because they refuse to allow abortion (which is a creative word for murder) or same-sex marriage (we believe in giving those ppl a second chance, but not uniting them. Marriage is the union between man and woman in the sacrament of holy matrimony). We are constantly being crticized. This is no longer criticism-- it's an attack on our religion!
Any religion who's beliefs become objected is immediately put on defence.

You speak the truth. I was just talking to a Wiccan the other day that believes her beliefs are a part of her and to contest and judge her beliefs is to contest and judge HER.

People have to be willing and secure enough to allow their beliefs to be tested. Only the people that are insecure and may not have the truth should be worried when their beliefs are held up to scrutiny because they and their pride will be hurt.

Religion is the source of a lot of evil and bigotry in this world.

One of the great things about Christianity is that you are invited to investigate and question it.
I have on many levels and God's truth is whole, it always leads me back to him.
