a batch system involves the storing of instructions / data and doing it all in one go - e.g. the overnight updating of your bank account transactions - it is the opposite of real time.

Batch process' are generally regarded as inferior to real time process, a handheld computer can do either it depends on the program / application it is running. If it stores a lot of stuff up and then does it all in one go then yes it is using a batch system
