I don't know about homemade vs Aquafresh, but I was surprised at my last dental exam. The Tech told me my gums were receeding and that the maninstream toothpastes I use are likely the cause. She recomended that I get the stuff that costs $4-5 per tube. I use baking soda w/ a little peppermint oil (get at the pharmacy) and brush with that. My gums healed up and the sore spots in mine and my sons' mouths are cleared.

No, you need Fluoride. Try Crest Prohealth. Has Stannous Fluoride, very good for teeth.
