Went on an Alaskan cruise, (1 week in duration), 6 years ago on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. Had an outside cabin with a balcony (definitely do this if you can afford it.). Went in the beginning of June. First-flew into Vancouver and boarded ship same day. Got a great deal on plane tickets on an early flight with Air Canada. Cruise + round trip plane ticket (from NYC) totalled $2200 (per person)--a great deal! Of course, that was 6 years ago.
Ship/crew/food/amenities terrific. Most excursions were good. (Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikam). Went through the "Inside Passage"--I believe most cruises take this route. Disembarked in Vancouver and stayed 2 days. Absolutely lovely, beautiful city; great people--would definitely go there on another trip.
Do your research/check with an excellent travel agent. You may be able to book a great trip through one of the online services. Check out all the info in the "fine print." It may pay to take out insurance, in case you have to cancel.
Alaska is very special--you will be journeying through areas untouched by man. Weather can vary with fog, rain, clouds, sun. Enjoy it for what it is and you'll have a great experience.

I think that Alaskan cruise are one of the most amazing cruises available. The sites are spectacular and so different than most other cruises that are available.
I think it really depends on what you like to do, but in my opinion they are wonderful. I would take an Alaskan cruise over any other cruise without question, they are fantastic. Everyone I know that has been on one feels the same way, it is really an amazing experience.
As far as what line. I like Princess the best for Alaska. They have some of the best cruises, but Royal Caribbean is also pretty popular and run a little less.
If you have the time and are able to do it, I would take a one way cruise to Alaska, this will almost double the amount of ports you visit and you get to see a lot more. The only downfall is that you are going to spend quite a bit more on your air. Also, some lines offer tours at each port, that is a great way to go as well, but it does cost a little more .
I think that Alaska is a great destination and I highly recommend it.

Go to Alaska. That was my first cruise and I absolutely loved it. I would go in late May/early June. That way, the weather is decent and there aren't as many bugs. You'll still see a bunch of animals though. I never saw the Northern Lights; I think they're only in the winter. But if you do decide to go on a cruise, the best cruise line is Norwegian Cruise Line. Some people will tell you different but I've always had a great experience with them.

My husband and I took an Alaskan cruise with Norweigian cruise lines for our honeymoon 7 years ago. It was fantastic! There was a great mix of ages. Some cruise lines cater to a more mature clientele and some are very pricey.
Norweigian was beautiful and it cost us about $4000. We also upgraded to a higher class room.
Holland America can be very expensive as can Princess but they have an older clientele. Check with your travel agent as to other cruise lines and budget and demographics.
It is worth it though! Wonderful!

Alaska cruise is not pricey. 7 day cruise starts at $700. each & cruisetour 9 days or more start at $1100.00 each Nowegian & Princess offers the best rates. May or Sept. is the best savings. As for worth it one has only have to go once and you will be thinking of when you can go again. Visit their sites and see for youself.
