Can inhaling helium from a balloon harm you?

I know inhaling it straight from the tank can kill you but how about just from whats left from an old birthday balloon? I have done it before when I was younger making my sisters laugh but is it safe?

It is safe for the most part, but long time exposure (doing this frequently) can have an adverse affect on your vocal cords.

It's not something you should o frequently, but it's good, harmless fun to do it once in a while for a laugh!
