My guess would be you have a bad EGR valve. Reason it comes on on longer trips is that you are probably on the freeway with higher speeds when the EGR operates. Take somewhere and have the SES lamp codes pulled to be safe.

I had a 99 dodge intrepid ES and the check engine light was comming on and the secruity light would stay on. I took it to a mechanic and he said that the computer went. He said it would be about 400 dollars to put a new one in, but It also caused transmission problems. I would defently get it checked out as soon as possibly.

Most likely culprit is an oxygen sensor, EGR valve is a good guess as well. No real way to know what is causing it without having it scanned for codes to see what code it is giving.

there are 300+ reasons the check engine light would come on. i just searched and couldnt find an easy way to pull the fault codes. You have to take it into autozone and they will do it for free.
