First thank you for wanting to help.
Second, do not presuppose by your statement that others are not helping out people in need. Many are, Many are not.
The best way to help out is to give a great deal of thought to exactly who it is you would feel needs the most help.
1) Call an organization in your area that serves the needs of that group. Volunteer. And then, as you proceed thru life, please pass along your desire to better the lives of others to at least one other person, and ask that person to do the same.
The journey of our lifetime starts with one step. You have made the first step by merely wanting to make a difference.
I personally feel that there are so many so-called orphan causes (ones with no big international following) that desperately need help and few people are paying attention. I donate to a cause that brings Vitamin A to every child born in an underdeveloped nation so that eventually no child will be born to a life of Blindness.
Locally, I volunteer to cook and serve meals at a local shelter for people who cannot afford three meals a day (or even one). I come home exhausted and bone tired. But sure makes me feel great to know that I met some wonderful human beings who were overly grateful that we were willing to be there for them.
Thank you again.

We can't save the whole world, but we CAN make the difference in peoples' lives, one at a time. Volunteer. In our newspaper, there is a section called PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE...groups that need volunteers. My wife and I help out at the local Judeo-Christian Outreach Center 2 Saturdays a month. She cooks and I serve/clean up for lunch and supper. We also help another group who gives gifts to kids of parents who are in JAIL, at Christmas. Several times a year, we help take toys that need work and fix them. Then before Christmas, we wrap and deliver them to the kids. When the kid says THAT'S FROM MY MOM? It can bring tears to our eyes. It's not much, but with as many people who do the same thing here, it DOES make a difference.
Folks in nursing homes sometimes seldom get visitors. There might be a group in your area that READS to those folks. If you go to church, maybe you can start a group that ministers to those alone in nursing homes/rehab centers.
Please, don't get me wrong. I'm not bragging, I'm just giving you an idea what YOU can do.

the list is endless for things you can do. you need to think about what you would like to do. there are many lonely elderly people in nursing homes that would just like to have someone to spend a little time with, there are those in shelters that are in need of clothing, shoes and coats, sick children in the hospital that could use some cheering up, kids that could use a big brother or big sister, food panties in need of food and volunteers to pack boxes with food. we have a woman here in salt lake city that has since 1994 put bread products, clothing and misc. items on her porch for anyone that is in need and they are welcome to come and take what is needed. she has very simple rules to follow and they are no smoking on her porch, try not to make a mess, don't take more than you need and if the porch light is off at night either be very quiet or come back later & don't disturb her family. she has never been recognized for the good she has done and i think she should be.

I do, but one cannot help the entire world. We allhave to do our parts, and so do those who need help when possible. A lot of them need to try to help themselves as well, and their world would be a little bit better.

in my experience, private charity does little. if you really
wish to help out, pay your donations to uncle sam.
or your state, or your county or your city. as socialist
as it seems. volunteer for the county. i used to be a volunteer
social worker for the county, so i wouldn't prowl the bars
at night. as socialist as it seems, the govt. does a more
cost-effective job of helping than private charity. private
charities are many times just fronts for swindlers and
bunco artists. like 'con men for christ', who advertise
that around the world, their 'down and out' customers
are in five-star shelters, complete with night lighted tennis
courts, jacuzzis, and steak seven days a week, with
mashed potatoes, gravy, fruit compote and salad.
they sleep in heavenly peace at all times, ministered to
by beautiful women or the if female, prince charming types.
the competition for the 'charity' dollar is fierce.
some of the advertisements are so slick, it would make
the most chicanerous ad man, absolutely wanna vomit.
like the nigerian letters. bunco mad. give generously. go
without food, feed fifty million starving eskimos. they
are counting on you. enjoy tax season. time to be jolly.
the Lord loveth a cheerful giver.

There are people in need all around you. You don't need to travel far to help a lonely elder with shopping, or even your own family or pets. Give, give, give.

IF you are able and trained to do so, teach them to help themselves so they don't need help anymore....
