My opinion is a Remington 870 Express. It's not real costly and very reliable. I have friends that hunt with $1,000 + shotguns, ex. Benelli Super Black Eagle which I know is a very well made gun. Although, I have been duck hunting and while those high dollar guns are freezing up because it got wet. My 870 was still shooting ducks without any problem. Plus, you can abuse the heck out of an 870 and it takes every bit of it and you don't worry so much about messing up an expensive shotgun.

If this is your first Shotgun have a look at the Remington 870. This is a fine gun and comes in many levels. I bought mine used from a gun store when the first buyer had sprayed the stock with some awful paint and then the store sprayed more black paint over that. The gun had never been fired and it was a simple task to strip and refinish the stock. The 870 has a 3 in chamber and came with both a long barrel for bird and clays and a short barrel for slugs (big game).

One that fits you. SxS, O/U, pump, auto, or single shot matters less than whether it points where you want it to, and a well-fitted shotgun will come to your shoulder almost by itself. You won't have to move your head or neck, it'll just point for you. And the weight of the gun needs to be between your hands. I personally like the feel of a good double, and for hunting prefer the history and romance of the side-by-side, and there are quite a few affordable Spanish and Czech SxS's. That you'll have to decide for yourself. But to repeat the fit is the most important thing, and it's well worth the trouble to have a fitting by an expert with a "try" gun (which isn't really a gun at all) and once you know the best length of pull, drop at heel, cast, etc., then you can shop for what's closest/simplest to modify to fit within your budget.

It all depends what you want to use it for. For home defense I would recommend a Winchester 1300. For hunting upland game I would go with a semi-automatic such as an old Browning A5 or a Remington 1100. If you like fancy, go with the Ruger Red Label over and under.

Remington, Model 870 Wingmaster, there have been more of these sold than any other pump shot gun every made.
Can get them either in 12ga. or 20 ga...U.S. Police Departments use them as well as the U.S. Military. One rugged shotgun.

Any good pump-action is my first vote. I am partial to Ithica. I like the pump because it makes a very distictive sound when pumped and serves as a good deterrent to intruders. The hardwood stock also makes a good "butt-stroke" device.
