I noticed that you said "stay" (as in vacation), rather than "live". So, I'm assuming you are looking for a good place to stay for a vacation.

As a previous poster mentioned, Anaheim is probably your best bet. Specifically, the hotels along Harbor Blvd. Since there are so many in the area, the rates are competitive. Be sure to do a map check before booking a hotel, to see how close it is to Disneyland. I always tell everyone to get as close as possible. It is SO nice to be able to leave the park for awhile in the afternoon for a break, then come back later. Also, there are many places to eat in the area, including downtown Disney. Everyone there is pretty much doing the same thing you are, and there is almost an instant comraderie. Even though we live locally, we make new friends all the time when we visit Disneyland.

My favorite hotels in the area (other than Disney Hotels) are the HoJo (Howard Johnson), Fairfield, and Candy Cane Inn.

If you can splurge, NOTHING beats staying at a Disney Hotel. If you can, try to book a stay at the Grand Californian. The Disneyland Hotel (espcially the Sierra Tower) is a good second choice. Both offer the true Disney experience, which makes your trip special and unforgettable.

Have fun!

Anaheim is great obviously because this is where Disneyland is. Places near the beach are great too, so I would look into Huntington Beach for sure. I think at one point it was voted safest city or something like that.

If you were thinking of going to Disneyland (the ultimate family friendly place!) , then definitely go to Anaheim. Beaches and other attractions aren't a far drive from there and Hollywood is just about 40 minutes away (without much traffic).

Hope this helps!

^ The Citadel is NOT in the heart of LA; that's ridiculously wrong. And it's not outdoors. The places most similar to what you listed are Old Town Pasadena, The Block in Orange, the Irvine Spectrum, Fashion Island (Newport Beach). I generally prefer the ones in Orange County because parking is easier (and free). Parking and traffic are the reasons I left LA.

Next time we go to LA, we're going to stay on Manhattan Beach. Its beautiful and they claim its the cleanest beach in the U.S. A great site to see what others recommend by real people is www.tripadvisor.com.
