This problem is all to common in my area. I live in New Orleans, and the clay soil conditions are not well suited to slab on grade applications. The result is that the "hangers" fail, and the pipe under the slab breaks. Tunneling is the only answer if you can not replace the loop from above, (as mentioned in previous answer). Tunneling is expensive, and labor intensive. It is the better solution however if you plan on having your slab leveled at the same time. Routing your plumbing in the attic will expose it to freezing conditions. A burst pipe below your slab is annoying, but one in your attic is a disaster. Make sure any plumbing exposed to these conditions is well insulated against freeze.

copper loop nightmare.... see if the hole is above slab... if so, soldier it & cover with inspection panel for further inspection

if not, you're goint to have to loop it over head to re make the connection, & abandon the underground loop

damage to slab if it ran a long time, maybe... all it could do is wash out some dirt, & only if it ran & ran...

if the copper loop was done right, you should have a hard plastic sleve protectinig the copper!
